    Becoming a personal trainer might seem simple. You know you like to work out or exercise, so it would make sense that you can help others do the same, right? Well, sort of. You can indeed help others meet certain fitness goals. However, you need to be sure to do things like get your training certification so you’re safe from legal liability.

    1. Earn a High School Diploma

    Obtaining a high school diploma is the most basic requirement for aspiring personal trainers. Without a diploma, your chances of being hired as a trainer are very slim. To become a personal trainer in five simple steps, the first being to graduate from high school or acquire a GED equivalent. This is one of the important documents to start a personal trainer career.

    2. Complete AED/CPR Certification

    Becoming a personal trainer in 5 steps starts with completing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. AED and CPR certifications are considered the baseline of life-saving skills for personal trainers.

    The AED certification will instruct a trainer on proper protocols, correct use, and maintenance of an AED.     3. Choose a Fitness Specialty

    These areas are weight loss, nutrition, sports performance training, and elderly fitness. Research the different types of certifications and make sure they are accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA). 

    4. Build a Portfolio

    Building a portfolio is an important part of becoming a personal trainer. It can help you showcase your skills and qualifications and provide a visual representation of your abilities to potential clients and employers. 

    Create an outline of what you want to include in your portfolio and decide on a format. You should consider including your biography and qualifications, a list of your certifications, client testimonials, samples of your workout plans, and any articles or reviews you’ve written.

    5. Partner With a Gym

    If you want to be successful in working as a personal trainer, you need to partner with a gym. This step is arguably the most critical, so it is important to take your time and research which gym would be the best fit for you. You want to find a gym that has all the necessary equipment and the possibility for growth.

    When selecting the gym, consider location, reputation, and cost. After you have completed your research, reach out to the gym for further discussion and negotiations. It would be wise to have a lawyer review any contracts to make sure you properly understand the agreement.
