Transgender adults are worried about finding welcoming spaces to live in later years.

Rajee Narinesingh, a transgender woman from Florida who is 56 years old, has struggled throughout her life, suffering from risky facial injections and workplace harassment. Despite her difficulties, she has seen a rise in acceptance of transgender people since coming out years ago. However, Narinesingh and other transgender seniors are worried about the future because of the recent adoption of state laws restricting transgender rights, particularly for young people.

As a result of these new regulations, which restrict gender-affirming care for kids in more than 20 states, the needs of trans youth have come to light. The retirement and aged care plans of transgender seniors, who already face deficiencies in healthcare and acceptable nursing facilities, have been cast in a new light by this. Concerns are exacerbated by discrimination, gender bias, and barriers to receiving quality care in senior living facilities.

More than 1.3 million transgender adults live in the United States, with 171,000 being 65 or older. Although more are starting to appear, few facilities exist specifically for the LGBTQ+ community, such as California’s Stonewall Gardens. To protect the comfort of transgender people in these settings, sensitivity training is crucial.

Although SAGE, an advocacy organization, trains elder care professionals, there is still a long way to go before transgender elders are treated with respect. Worry has increased due to the recent uptick in anti-trans policies, with SAGE reporting a 40% rise in hotline calls from concerned trans seniors, mostly in conservative areas.

Several states have introduced inclusive laws, but the trend of restricting healthcare access creates uncertainty. Trans adults have left states with restrictions for medical care, sometimes relying on crowdfunding. However, this option is often inaccessible for trans seniors.

Amid challenges, transgender seniors find solace in intergenerational collaboration, believing the community will endure these setbacks. They emphasize the importance of unity and resilience, assuring trans youth that the community will overcome these trials.
